Optimize Eastman Chemical Materials Handling Operations

Adam Russell- Eastman Chemical

Description:

Materials consumed and produced by Eastman Chemical’s Tennessee Operations are stored in various internal/external warehouses around the region.  Warehousing needs for one manufacturing division had not been evaluated recently to determine if the staffing and space occupied were reasonable and cost-effective.  A Six Sigma team was chartered to investigate and assess the value-added performance of the associated warehouses and staffing.  The team determined and advised management about specific gaps that should be reduced to align performance with current business expectations.  Following the DMAIC process, the Six Sigma team drove quickly to implement critical improvements resulting in permanent hard savings of $600K/yr.

Reduction of internal scrap rates

Joe Kirkpatrick- NN Ball and Rollers

Description:  Internal scrap rates in 2009 were running 230,000 pounds or 4.47% of production packed.  With average selling prices around $2.65 / pound, this is a $609,500 loss.

 Link and Lean

Aaron W. Stresemann- Snap-on Tools

Description: Link and Lean- Linking the steps from raw material to the customer can turn your operation from a push to pull system. In these tough financial times, large inventory and slow reaction times can lead to your demise. Learn how we transformed our process from forecast driven to disappearance driven. Including your suppliers in the lean journey will improve flexibility in all aspects of the business.

Label Defect Reduction

Adam Deleon- BAE Systems

Description: The purpose of this project was to reduce the amount of label defects for drum packaging. The project related to the business objective by saving rework cost associated with re-labeling drum packaging and making the process more efficient. One of the primary benefits of this project was the consolidation of labels, which helped to reduce internal error and improved efficiency.
